Trauma and Abuse

In some people, an extreme traumatic event, such as a physical or sexual
assault, terrible accident, natural disaster, or the sudden and unexpected
death of a loved one, may lead to a condition called post traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD).  Many survivors begin their journey with one to one
counseling, others prefer a group setting.  Therapy provides a safe,
confidential setting in which to explore issues of great power and emotional
weight.  Shame, fear, anger, doubt, betrayal and grief are often first
expressed in therapy.  Clients learn how to express their feelings in
constructive and responsible ways. They gain an understanding of their
history and how it may be affecting their lives today.  Trust, safety,
boundaries and sexuality are core issues survivors address in therapy.
